Spot on assessment, John. I and many other Left-leaning folks I know have arrived at the same conclusions.

My take is that those of us who identify with Progressive causes are naturally Big Picture thinkers. It's hard to focus on one or a few issues when you see everything interconnected.

I've been heartened by the efforts of Americans Elect to mount a third option for 2012 that represents those of us who aren't loyal to either Republican or Democratic camps. We'll see.

John Renesch

Thanks, Pam. I have joined American Elect as a mitigator of the dysfunctional system we have allowed to devolve.

John, I need to point out that your posting exhibits a rather condescending view of those you call “Liberals.” In the first place, the very term “Liberal” was a label placed on the left by those “Conservatives” that you tout for their “laser focus” and ability to stick to a few issues. The term “liberal” has, of course, a negative connotation in political terms, thus its repeated use by the Right to paint all Left-leaning folks as somehow too liberal with spending and social programs…. Shorthand way of painting everyone with an inaccurate brush.

I note that you did not use the term “Progressive” even once in your post, despite most so called “Liberals” preferring the term and using it to describe themselves – a bit of a slap at them to call them by a name they do not prefer.

So, start by cleaning up your own terms. “Left” and “Right” perhaps are the easiest, or “Democrat” and “Republican” for the more specific party-centric comments. But “Liberal” should be left off this discussion entirely unless you simply cannot detach yourself from your Conservative prejudices.

Alma

Gotta agree with Merc on this one; the only time you use "Progressive" is in the blog post title.

If your goal is to foster discussion then a good start is to turn down the volume on the stereotyping of people based on political stripes.

Happy New Year.

Alma and Merc, how do you see my post as stereotyping people...or as condescending? How do you see me doing this? I'd appreciate feedback on this for it isn't my intention nor do I see it - even after rereading my post.

The idea that you both see me as definitively conservative is really funny for that it not my orientation as I thought had explained. My conservative friends think I am a flaming liberal, having "lived in San Francisco too long" as one has written.

I am very interested in what you saw that brought you to the conclusions you came to.

karl

Johnrenesch, it looks to me like Merc made the point perfectly clear. What else do you need explained to you? It is not funny, it is obvious that you have a conservative bent... not even a bent, but a clear conservative position. Your language gives you away. If you are "flaming" it is certainly not your politics.

johnrenesch

Karl, Merc and Alma:

I live in San Francisco and have never heard of anyone objecting to the term Liberal. I suspect there is some stereotyping from your side (what you are accusing me of) when you label me Conservative just because I use the term Liberal, call something I don't even see as "obvious."

I don't think you will find one friend of mine who describe me as a Conservative.
