The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games have taken on a deeper meaning to me. First, the year I spent writing my new book, Putting Our Differences to Work, made looking in on Olympians' journey still another affirmation of "the fastest way" to innovation is through people. Also, it started with a young Masters Student that showed up on my path earlier this year --- in English, her name is "Shiny." She lives in Shanghai and is studying in Munich. She returned home to China for the summer. In a message she wrote to me as the Games were unfolding, she offered new meaning and a moving perspective on what Olympic GOLD is when it comes to friendship and what we can take away and apply to our lives. She wrote:
"The Olympic Games are very exciting. I think the most exciting thing is that people get to know each other (as well as others' culture and spirit) through the games and work their best to cheer their people. I love all the nice moments endowed by excellence around the world!!
Somehow we are doing the same thing in a different way, to know each other, to listen, to share, to grow and pass the torch of knowledge throughout nations. Let us enjoy the Olympics and pass on the friendship and peace with our hearts and souls!"
Another friend and colleague, Dr. Alex Pattakos, author of Prisoners of Our Thoughts helped others learn about "The Original Meaning of the Olympics," in an article he wrote in his new "Living with Meaning" column on the Huffington Post. He reminds us that we have Baron Pierre de Coubertin to thank for bringing back the ideals of Olympic Charter..
"...Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example, and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles."
I see now that with all its joys, tragic disappointments, new levels of excellence, and even a few imperfections, for a couple of weeks, we've had an opportunity to come together and witness the best of what the human spirit can produce by reaching inside ourselves. Along with my friend, Shiny, I invite you to join us and others to let the Summer Games soak into your soul and ripple outward through your heart and conscience as we move back into the routines of our lives and work.
It was good to share it with you all in distance!
What touched you about the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games?
What will you take away?
Best...
