Social media continues to transform the way we communicate with one another, and I admit that I’m hooked. Are you? Blogging, YouTube, virtual classrooms and meetings places, as well as platforms like Facebook, MySpace, and Xing have caught the attention of even the most resistant. In a groundbreaking cross-industry global study conducted last year by Melcrum (“How to Use Social Media to Engage Employees”), it was estimated that by this time, almost 60 percent of organizations would likely have some sort of social media program in place.
What is exciting about this Web 2.0 evolution is that there is an energy that comes with this new sense of freedom and connection—and companies are rapidly and wildly opening up new possibilities for collaboration we never imagined.
This is how I begin a new article, "The Virtual Gathering Experience," published this week in the ASTD Learning Circuits, a resource for e-learning.
What I didn't know when I wrote the article is how the current economic crisis may significantly elevate the importance of online learning, collaboration, and gathering beyond what we ever imagined. Let's face it technology is helping us put our differences to work in ways we never imagined were possible. What I am learning in virtual dialogues across the world from our Global Dialogue Center CONFERENCE CENTER is that gathering matters. We like it. Practice is making them meaningful. It is helping us transcend some barriers quicker, faster, better than what we've ever been able to do by flying all around the world.
In "The Virtual Gathering Experience" I chronicle a personal experience about a virtual gathering at the Greater IBM Connection, offering some key points to pass along to you. READ THE ARTICLE
What are you learning about "virtual gathering"?
I would love to know your thoughts.
