Hello everyone,
I would like to have a better understanding of what accommodations work best for what disabilities. I have an idea of what works for some blind or visually impaired people; since I am completely blind myself. I do not know everything in the area of accommodations for the blind or visually impaired since all people have different needs. I have a lot to learn about how to help others overcome challenges with other disabilities so we all can be more effective in the work place.
Accommodations do not have to be high tech or expensive all the time. A lot of low tech inexpensive solutions work well. Accommodations do not have to be paid by your employer only. Creative means can be used to get accommodations. If possible; you could get some yourself; or in the case of training; do some self training by reading materials on-line or talking with others. Some accommodations can be obtained by the government, depending on what country or state you live in with some persistence.
I want to learn what accommodations work best for other disabilities. If possible give examples of what worked or did not work for you or someone you know so all can learn. Will also need to know what challenges this accommodation helps. Want to learn what is required in other countries as well.
I hope you can help us all to be better prepared to continue in our existing jobs, move to new positions within your current employer or outside, and be better prepared to enter the work force as a disabled person.
Below are a few accommodations that worked for me.
• Getting a screen reader so I could use a personal computer.
•Orientation and mobility training so I could find areas within the building I work in.
• Getting training in any specialized medical equipment I might need to use in the work place. Example a talking glucometer so I being completely blind, can test my blood glucose level.
Other examples to spark ideas
• Reduced work schedule.
• Additional breaks
• Use of a service animal

I look forward to hearing from you. Please share what works and what does not for you so others can learn. Even if you do not work for others outside the home; share what works for you around where you live. These techniques you use to make your life go a little easier may also work well for others. Also share any other resources you have found to be valuable in your country. If you live outside the US, I would like to hear about your regulations or legislations around accommodations.
