Dear Friends,
As we enter this sacred month of October and reflect on the problems of our recent past -- including the tragedies of Irag, the tsunami, and hurricanes -- let us come together and commit ourselves to exploring paths to a better future. Anger and sadness are forms of energy. Rather than dwelling on negative aspects, let us instead apply this energy constructively.
October 2005 is indeed a special time. The sacred Muslim lunar month of Ramadan and the sacred Jewish lunar month of Tishrei both begin in October. (After 2007, that will not happen again for thirty years.) October 2 is Worldwide Communion Sunday and also Gandhi's birthday. October 4 is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, a man deeply connected to the earth and all living creatures who was a serious student of Islam, as well as Catholicism, and one of the few Christians of his time who opposed the Crusades.
October we welcome you!
We pledge to work individually and communally to create a better world.
