TRAGEDIES IN THE WORLD

As we look out across the world to our global family members in South and Central Asia devastated by the aftermath of the earthquake, we are again reminded of how fragile life is for us all. It is as if nature herself, frustrated by our behavier ---- having failed to get our attention from early disasters ----- is again screaming out in a bigger way to us all to STOP our bickering and greedy wars and self-interested deeds--- and begin looking to one another ---- appreciating the goodness that life could have for all people with just a slight shift in our thinking and actions. This may be far-fetched, but have you noticed our apathy, our indifference, our inattention, our willingness to just accept the wars, greed, lies, injustice, empty photo ops to sell the day's talking points, sub-standard performance from our leaders, suffering and abuse of our fellow citizens, violations of the stewardship we hold for our environment ?---- one could go on and on. This could be a wake-up call, yes? Another wake-up call to humanity to look at what is important in this life --- each other.

What does one say to our suffering friends...? What wishes can we send them. If you could take the pain away with a whisper in their ear, where might your sincere message take them, if just for a moment? All day, the beginning of an old poem my dad used to recite when I was little keeps playing over and over with it's comforting message. Here are a few lines (by Louise Fletcher Tarkington)...

I wish that there were some wonderful place,
Called the Land of Beginning Again,
Where all our mistakes and all our heartaches,
And all of our poor, selfish grief
Could be dropped, like a shabby old coat, at the door,
And never put on again.

We would find all the things we intended to do,
But forgot, and remembered--too late,
Like praises unspoken, little promises broken,
And all of the thousand and one
Little duties neglected that might have perfected
The day for one less fortunate...

All the tragedies in places all over the world just this year, speak to us.

How is it that we could be better?

The other night I heard an interview with Kurt Vonnegut about his book A Man Without A Country. I'm not a fan of his ---- his humor even at 82 still is a little dark for me. However, he just showed up by-chance with the flip of the channel for this interview and said something that caught my attention. He offered up that regardless of whether you believe Jesus is God or not that he felt it was hard to deny that he had said some very significant things worth listening to [yes! he did; I agree] and that our Christian leaders seem to have overlooked some of the core messages. Then he listed off a few of the Beautitudes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount:

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the p.e.a.c.e.m.a.k.e.r.s...

Then he questioned where war, greed, lust for power and other such actions fit into these values???

I'd like to know the answer myself, wouldn't you? ALSO, I also would like to be more meek, merciful, pure in heart and a devoted peacemaker in all I do.
