The riots in France have filled our TV screens and the Internet. The fingers are pointing---few have stopped to listen or to question WHY? Why do such seemingly horrible acts take place --- few question the absolute desperation and hopelessness that led to them. Instead, we shun the messengers that we've long ignored, when they tried to tell us of their need in peaceful tones. We watch millions and billions be spent on illegal wars, killing, profits and buying votes as a more important agenda than people.
From my vantage point, the riots, as history proves, are the voice of the frustration, injustice and desperation of our troubled world ---- a symptom --- a symbol --- the voice of the voiceless, crying out for all those systematically left out, overlooked, exploited and forgotten. It is the cry of those living shadowed by a cloud of indifference that hovers over them like a smothering blanket, blocking out the hope and promise of the future that belongs to all of us. It seems to me, in the senseless fires is the cry of our common humanity calling out at this time in history...our brothers and sisters reaching out to us saying...
Open your eyes, you who sit in comfort.
See me.
Acknowledge me.
Give me hope.
Share the possibilities.
I am here.
I belong.
I am also a YOU.
Some have called them slaves revolting. Instead from here, I see a clear and present face of our common destiny screaming out in desperation for our attention. Look around. What we are seeing in photos across the world are just mirrors of what is all around us, probably not far from you. Have you stopped to notice?
It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. --- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
