I'm still seeing this new year, like life itself, being part of a series of new beginnings. Each one is always inviting us to create the work and lives we want to live---to become more ourselves. Most of us find ourselves at times wanting to reignite our passion, strengthen our commitment and expand our accomplishments in all aspects of our life.
This time in particular has caught me in a place where I am being called from it seems so many directions that there is a longing to just stand still. I know what happens there is good.
In a book, The Wonders of Solitude, Sister Corita Kent, a Carmelite Nun, shared her wisdom. It pops up once in a while reminding me that stopping is very valuable.
"And at some time
in your life
trying to be good
may be to stop running
and take time...
to be quiet
and discover who you are
and where you've been..."
Is it time for you to stop running and discover who you've become?

My own experience and the views of peers reinforce the value of stepping out of my comfort zone to discover my true self. Reading about women like Sister Corita Kent, Tenzin Palmo and former tennis pro Andrea Jaeger (who was recently ordained as an Anglican Dominican nun), remind me that a willingness to change is especially valuable when we remain open not only to what we think we must learn, but especially to what other people believe we should hear to grow.
